I see hard drives that are classified as 5400 and 7200 rpm. Is the hard drive speed important? How can I tell what speed my hard drive is?

The speed of a hard drive will determine how fast the drive rotates. The faster the platers rotate the faster the operating system will be able to read and write to the drive. So, if your budget allows, always bet the 7200 rpm drive.

To tell the speed of your hard drive you can just read the label on the hard drive or right-click on your hard drive and choose Properties -> Hardware make a note of the drive name and Google it. You will then be able to see the specs of your drive.
