I have a website which appears nice on Firefox, Chrome and Opera but looks messy on IE. As a non habitual coder, I am sure it will take days and nights to fix it myself. Suppose I decide not to fix it, how many percent of traffic I potentially lose?

If you don't change the html and css to accommodate IE then you will be annoying a huge amount of people. Internet Explorer still has at least a 36% market share so if I were you I would try to figure out what is causing the messy look. Fortunately, IE 8 and the new IE 9 will be more standards compliant.
