Ok, I know it is stupid but....I spilled coffee on my laptop keyboard! Fortunately I did it before turning the laptop on. So, how damaged is it? Will it need a costly repair?

I spilled coffee on my laptop keyboard!

The damage depends on the type of laptop and the amount of coffee stilt on it. Some laptops have keyboard designs that can help minimize the effect of a spill.
I would pull out the battery and hard drive immediately and try to dry the laptop for a few days. Then try to turn the laptop on; if it doesn't work then chances are high that your motherboard has failed. The cost of fixing a laptop motherboard are high, so just buy another laptop and transfer the file from the old drive to the new laptop.
