Will not play anything for me but others will. It is a brand new install, what could make this happen and is Media Player really worth it or should I just go with what works?

My computer freezes after 10 - 15 minutes when I play a game. It works just fine when I use it for typing, surfing the net, watching movie, or whatever it is as long as I'm not playing a game. I assume that the problem is with the video card but I'm not sure how to fix it.
