Recently began experiencing "Checksum errors" etc from my Gateway Notebook computer. The Blue screen of death and all the fixens. I thought my hard drive finally failed until I was reviewing different pages and sites with others who were having the same difficulty with blue screens and all the while, only the CMOS battery had gone 'flat'. I've searched for schematics of my model Gateway, even so far as contacting Gateway support only to be told since I was no longer under warranty I would be considered a "pay for help" consumer. To hell with that....can anyone please help me with a detailed written "walk through" of how this particular task is performed? Better still, I would truly appreciate a video of "how to" do this task. Thanks for the consideration.

Hi,

I have Panasonic CF-29 that I am trying to fix for my sister. There is no volume. XP does not recognize a sound card. I am not sure if the laptop has a sound card. I never opened up a laptop case. So I prefer not to open the case unless I have to. I bought an external sound card and XP doest recognize it. My PC recognized the sound card. I connected a USB mice and an IPod and XP didn't recognize it either. So there is a problem with USB port. According to ITunes, the previous owner connected their IPod 2 months ago. So the UBS port was working 2 months ago. Any ideas? Will an internal sound card fix the problem? I already updated the chipset. And uninstalled all the devices under USB System controller in Device Manager.

My sister was given a Panasonic CF-29. The volume wasn't working. My sister wants to see if I can fix the problem. When I open up ITunes, I get this message that Audio/Video playback may not operate properly. I click on play & the song does not play. Windows Media Player said it couldn't play because there is a problem with my sound device. My speakers and headphones work on my PC. Realtek 97 and some other version of Realtek was installed last week. I'm not sure what happened, but neither of these programs are under Add/Remove programs. I tried to do a restore to when these 2 programs were installed but I was unsuccessful.

The Sound & Audio Device properties- Volume, Audio & Voice tab are greyed out.

Sound video and game controller in Device Manager- All devices are working properly. And all say Unknown location. The devices are: Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices & Video Codecs.

I tried to download drivers at Panasonic and Realtek. They made me download Drivertool and Driverupdate. Neither of these programs said I had to update my sound drivers. I tried to do a system restore to before I installed these 2 programs & I was unsuccessful. Maybe something is wrong with System Restore? Also Driver tool & update both say that the sound device is unplugged which isnt true. I turned on my speakers and turned the volume high. When I hook it up to the laptop, I get a big noise.

My sound driver is Sigma Tel C-Major Audio. I updated the driver today & still cant play songs with ITunes or Windows Media. When I try download drivers, they always make me download some program that will check my drivers and tell me what drivers need to be updated. And these programs charge if I want to update my drivers.

Windows Audio is set to Automatic. I have installed some updates from Windows Update. There are no more updates. And now the only day I can try to do a restore is today. I went to BIOS and pressed F2 repeatedly and I got a noise. I don't know how to check to see my sound is disabled or not in BIOS. The only thing I see related to Sound is Microphone Jack: PC. Pressing FN+F5 and the other combination didnt make a difference.

Any ideas? I dont have the restore factory settings CD that came with the laptop. And I dont have the Windows CD. I pressed F11 after booting my laptop. It made noise and then Windows booted. Please help.

It sounds like the inverter on your LCD Sony monitor has failed. Depending on how good you are with repairs you can try to find the proper inverter for your LCD and do the repair yourself, but it's probably better to just buy a new monitor.

It sounds like your RAM is failing or you might have a problem with your hard drive. If you have multiple sticks of RAM in your computer then take one out and see if the problem persists.

It could also be the motherboard is failing as that model of Dell has a horrible problem with the motherboard.

I acquired a Linksys SD205 5-port 10/100 network switch that's missing its AC/DC adapter (power supply). The label on the switch case by the power input says "DC 12V/500mA." I dug through my spare parts and came up with a power supply rated at 9 volts and 500mA. It had been used for a cordless phone base station. I plugged it in and my volt meter indicated 14.23 volts. I checked some other power supplies of different ratings and they were all outputting above their rated levels, so this doesn't seem to be unusual. I'd feel more comfortable using a power supply that was putting out less voltage, but I wonder if the Linksys power supply also outputs about 14 volts.

Does anyone out there have a Linksys SD205 5-port 10/100 network switch power supply that they could check the voltage at the output and tell me what they discover? Also, what are the consequences of slightly excessive voltage for a network switch such as this? Can it harm the computers on the network or will it just fry itself?

I'd appreciate any assistance provided.

Getting started in the computer business is usually a slow process. Basically, I would just start advertising your computer services in your local paper, Facebook, etc.. and do on-site repairs only. Once you've gathered enough clients being an on-site tech then it is a lot easier to then find a location to rent and open shop.

I am not aware are any website that can help you out in this matter. It's like starting any business; do your research before you start your business.

Thanks for telling me the model of your computer. It really helps me to give better advice.

On your specific board you will have to remove the video card to get full access to your BIOS battery. Once you've removed your video card then you will see that there is a clip that you need to press and then your battery will just fall out.

I watched your video about changing the CR2032 battery -- but my battery is BEHIND the reddish board -- half of the battery is above and half below (not in "open territory" like you show). Is there a way to maneuver this battery out or will I have to somehow remove this graphics card (the cable for the monitor is what plugs into this board which transects the battery)?

Thanks very much for any reply. The computer is a Gateway FX6800-01e -- the first FX on the shelves a few years ago.

I need more information about this problem before I can diagnose it.

At what point does the laptop restart?

Also, have you removed the DVD from your drive?

Let me know, thanks.

You can't go back to factory settings without re-formating your drive. Depending on what type of computer you have you might have a recovery partition on your hard drive. If you do have a recovery partition then you can revert your operating system back to a time when you first bought the computer.

Otherwise, just uninstall the problem programs and create a new user account. That will help you have a cleaner profile.

I would recommend just re-installing the OS, as it will be the best solution in the long term.

I would try uninstalling the audio drivers and re-installing the most updated drivers for your audio card.
