How to Share Files and a Printer in Windows Vista

In this tutorial I will show you how to share files and a printer using Windows Vista. The greatest benefit of have multiple computers is the ability to share files and printers because it improves efficiency and keeps cost down. With the rise of cloud computing file sharing will eventually change but for now if multiple people want to have access to the same files then the easiest way to accomplish this task is to setup file sharing on one computer or server and then everybody will have access to the files. Sharing a printer that is attached to another computer is a great way to keep cost down by buying only one printer and not one printer for every user. Let’s begin this tutorial and I’ll show you how easy it is to share files and printers.


Steps:

1. Find the Start button and click on it.

2. Now click on the Network button. Once the network window pops up you might see a warning bar asking you if you’d like to turn on network discovery and file sharing. Click on the bar and those “Turn on Network Discovery and File Sharing”

3. User Account Control will now ask you to allow the operation to continue. Click Continue. Then click yes to turn on network and file sharing.

4. Now you will need to change the Workgroup Name on your computer. To do this just click the Start button again and then right-click the Computer button and select Properties.

5. Once the System window appears scroll down to the Computer Name, Domain and Workgroup Settings section and then click the Change Settings link. Again User Account Control will ask for your permission to continue. Press Continue.

6. The System Properties window will appear, so now you have to click on the Change button near the bottom of the window.

7. When the next window appears you can choose a computer name and a workgroup name for your system. Once you’ve selected the desired computer name and workgroup name press OK.

8. You will now see and Welcome message stating that your successfully connected to the workgroup. Click OK and then close all the windows and restart your computer.

9. If you want to share a particular file or folder then right-click on the desired folder and choose Share….

10. In the File Sharing window click on the drop-down menu and select Everyone and then press the Share button. User Account Control will warm you again so just press Continue. You will then get a message confirming the folder is shared. Click the Done button.

11. To share a printer click the Start button and then click on the Control Panel button. Now find Hardware and Sound section and click the Printer link.

12. Once the printer window appears you will see all your installed printers. Select the desired printer and right-click on it and then select the Sharing… option. Under the Sharing tab press the Change Sharing Options button and then click continue when the User Account Control appears.

13. Now check the Share This Printer box and select a share name for the printer. Click OK and now you’re done. Your printer is now shared.

Tips:

– Sometimes there might be a problem with sharing files and printers if you are sharing from different operating systems, like Windows XP to Vista.
