How to Setup an Email in Windows Mail

In this tutorial I will show you how to setup an email account in Windows Mail. Windows Mail is the default mail client included with Vista and therefore it has replaced Outlook Express. Knowing the basics of setting up an email account in Windows Mail is one of the first things people do when they get a new computer and instead of calling your ISP or email provider you can setup your email yourself. Windows Mail is a great basic email client and unless your a heavy business user it will serve you well without buying any expensive program like Microsoft Outlook. Just follow this tutorial and you will be up and running sending and receiving emails in no time.


1. Find the program Window Mail and open it. It is usually located under the All Programs menu of the Start Menu.

2. If this is the first time opening the program then the setup wizard will appear and guide you through the process of setting up your email. I would recommend canceling the setup wizard and doing the setup manually.

3. Once your in the program then click on the Tools menu and then choose Accounts.

4. In the Account screen click the Add button and follow the below steps.

5. Type in your name or business name in the Name field.

6. Type in your email address in the Email field.

7. In the Incoming Server (POP) field type in the address of the POP email server. You can get this information from your internet or email provider.

8. In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) field type in the address of the SMTP email server. This address is found from your email provider.

9. Now type in your username that you got from your provider in the Username field.

10. In the Password field type in your password that you received from your provider.

11. Click OK and now your done and ready to send and receive emails.


– Some email providers have custom port settings and authentication settings so ask your provider about these settings.
