How to Search for Files in Windows Vista

In this tutorial I will show you how to search for a file using the Search function in Windows Vista. Sometimes we forget where we saved a file and sometimes we are looking for specific system files and we don’t the location, either way, we should be familiar using the Search function in Vista. One of the biggest complaint I heard from people using Vista is, “Where is the search function?”. It used to be so easy to find and use in Windows XP, but Vista is another story. Once a person gets use to the Vista Search feature they quickly realize that it’s far superior to the old way of searching for a file. I will show you how to do a basic search and the more advanced search so you’ll never lose a file again.

Steps:

1. Go to the Taskbar and click the Start button.

2. At the bottom of the Start Menu you will see the Vista Search box. Start your search by typing in the name of the file you are looking for and then press Enter.

3. If Windows says that it can’t find the file you are looking for then press the Search Everywhere button.

4. In the Search screen find the Advanced Search button and click it.

5. Now you have many more options to work with. To start your search again type in the file name of your file in the Name field.

6. After that click the drop down menu where it says Indexed Location and choose the location you want Vista to search in. If you are not sure of the location then choose the Everywhere option and press the Search button.

7. Once Vista is done searching it display all the files that meet your search criteria. Just double click the file and it will open. It’s that simple.

Tips:

– To speed up the Windows Vista search function you can manually force Vista to index all the files on your hard drive.
